Relaxing after the easy and triumphant capture of Hokkaido, William luxuriated in his new organza armor. He discovered new patterns in his superlative plunder, experimented with varying proportions of ice and soda in his sake, and held court with those that recognized his wit and excellent taste. One afternoon while wandering the grounds of the castle, he happened upon the nature park of the former Emperor. Surrounded by canals and populated by a menagerie of oddly docile creatures, it became clear the preserve was filled with delights. He spent days exploring the gardens and garlands, sketching the unusual trees, making friends with the sole sloth – a creature not seen before in Asia – and playing novel games of fetch with the hyenas and dingoes.
