William lengthened his stay on the island of Hokkaido to a full 12 months, steeping himself in the ways and differences of this ancient culture. He studied the seasons and accompanying festivals, spent time in the temples and monasteries learning to mediate and center his ki, and understanding the simple yet complex path to reincarnation, and the possibilities it presented. The joy found in the small enlightenments he uncovered, brought clarity to his life, and a modicum of zen to his actions. The idea that this life would not be the end, but would instead mark the start of another journey, brought him great strength and stability.
