Say Cheese, 2024
While apocryphal and difficult to verify, one short story has become moderately famous among sagacious Mongolophiles. Between run-of-the-melee battles William was wont to fish the ancient and sacred Onan River. He would stand, waist deep in the frigid water -sometimes avoiding another accidental forest fire but mostly waiting motionlessly for a particularly clever Taimen to approach his dangling hook. Over many visits, using small treats like a cube of chevre or a stick of pecorino, he slowly won the trust of the fish, ultimately training it to say, “Cheese!” as it leapt out of the water. This didn’t stop William from eventually eating his piscine friend during a particularly harsh winter, but he did remember the moments while selecting ideal morsels from his Sunday fromagerie platters.
