The Hokkaido Castle was ensconced within dozens of miles of majestic stone and earthen walls, and in his explorations William followed them all. Walking with Dr. P. Fong one moonlit night he discovered a pair of lanterns standing in a lake plaited with lilies and lotus flowers. He was so completely taken with them and their gilt, polished stone, and tile, that he had them most carefully ripped from their moorings and packaged up for delivery home to the Onan Valley. While not the easiest things to move when pillaging across the steppes, he felt that the serenity they would bring to his pool house, and newly constructed karesansui, would more than make up for the additional effort.
